About UAW Divest Now!

In October 2023, UAW Labor for Palestine reignited a longstanding demand urging the UAW International Executive Board (IEB) to divest from Israel Bonds, which directly funds the ongoing and spreading genocide in occupied Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, and beyond. The company’s own website highlights “the crucial role of Israel Bonds during this time of conflict and war.” Although our union has called for a ceasefire, the UAW IEB maintains somewhere between $400,000 and $1,000,000 in investments in Israel Bonds. This means that we are still actively funding a genocide that the IEB has publicly called to end.UAW rank-and-file workers have been demanding divestment from Israel Bonds for over fifty years–since 1973, when the Arab Workers Caucus initiated a wildcat strike over the union’s financial backing of Israel’s expanding settler colony and military violence.Read the FAQ >>Echoing demands by Arab, Black, and other UAW members in 1973, UAW members today are demanding to know why the IEB is investing their dues money to support an expanding U.S.-backed genocide. After over a year of campaigning, we are now close to winning divestment. On October 7, the UAW International Executive Board (IEB) received hundreds of emails demanding that the union divest from Israel Bonds. Later that day, President Shawn Fain told members of UAW Labor for Palestine that he would vote to divest at the next opportunity! And the momentum keeps building. On October 13, our allies in Unite all Workers for Democracy overwhelmingly voted to pass a joint resolution with UAWL4P calling on the UAW to divest from Israel Bonds. And on November 5, UAW Labor for Palestine publicly announced the launch of our UAW Divest Now! campaign. (Press release here.)Now we need to make sure divestment is on the agenda. The IEB's next meeting is on November 12. As part of a broader call to action, we’re coordinating with members all over the country to call the IEB to ask that they schedule and pass a vote to divest from Israel Bonds no later than the end of their next meeting, November 14.Join our call campaign here. Tell the IEB: Vote YES to divest! >>

UAW Labor for Palestine is a nationwide group of rank-and-file UAW members working to end Israel's genocide in Gaza. Our diverse and multiracial coalition includes workers from industries ranging from automobile manufacturing to higher education and legal aid.We formed in October 2023 and successfully mounted a pressure campaign encouraging UAW's International Executive Board (IEB) to pass a ceasefire resolution.

However, there's work to be done before the ceasefire can become a reality. Our current priorities are for the International Executive Board to pass a BDS resolution and help us organize UAW worksites that send arms and other materials to Israel to redirect our comrades' jobs away from the US-Israeli war machine.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: After Blue Wall Collapse, Union Rank-and-File Demands UAW Stand with its Base, Divest from Israeli Genocide

Rank-and-File caucus UAW Labor for Palestine demands UAW leadership put their money where their mouth is by divesting up to $1 million from genocide.

NOVEMBER 6, 2024—After a big night for billionaires, hundreds of UAW members affiliated with the national coalition UAW Labor for Palestine have launched a new campaign, “UAW Divest Now!,” to demand that their union respect the Palestinian trade union picket line by immediately divesting from Israel Bonds. With the support of UAW leadership, the Harris campaign banked on working people voting for concessions to right-wingers and the wealthy. It failed. The UAW Divest Now! campaign is an alternative to these failed tactics. We represent members who are frustrated that American institutions claiming to represent the working class, including UAW and both political parties, have caved to billionaires by funding US-backed Israeli genocide.UAW invests between $400,000 to $1 million in Israel Bonds despite being the first major union to support a ceasefire in Palestine. Israel Bonds directly funds genocide and the construction of illegal settlements in Palestine. The UAW Divest Now! campaign calls on the UAW International Executive Board to honor UAW’s stated values and anti-apartheid history by voting to divest no later than November 14, just over a week from election day.“Regardless of who’s in the White House, UAW can take on billionaires tomorrow by divesting from the wealthy investment fund that slaughters our siblings in Palestine. If UAW is serious about taking on the billionaire class, they need to put their money where their mouth is and divest from Israel Bonds,” says Dawnya Ferdinansen, an auto manufacturing worker with UAW Local 14 in Toledo, Ohio.Speaking at Black Lake Lodge, UAW’s conference center, on October 7, President Shawn Fain privately informed UAW Labor for Palestine members that he will support divestment if the IEB puts it to a vote. If the IEB votes to divest, it will make UAW the first major US institution to divest from financial holdings in Israeli genocide.“Shawn Fain made headlines for his no-concessions approach and solidarity with the working class. We agree – we can’t afford more BS. UAW leadership needs to come home to its base, stop caving to billionaires, and support the least among us in actions as well as words,” says Trip Eggert, a member of UAW Local 2325.The UAW Divest Now! campaign has reached out to hundreds of UAW members who are calling their IEB representatives to demand immediate divestment. Upcoming actions will roll out throughout the week.#########
